This year has been crazy. A whirlwind of change, realizations, and growing. But the craziest, most awesome thing that happened this year for me? My 21st birthday. In this article, I’ll tell you why.

First of all:
I had 3 auditions on my birthday.
2 selftapes, 1 in-person audition for Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago.
First was a SAG-AFTRA new media film selftape due by 5pm, Dec. 6th. I got the feeling it was a choose-your-fate supernatural procedural, and the character was the “queen of the underworld,” Cthulha. AKA, a Billie Eilish type of girl. She sings, she’s sassy, and she’s going to burn your ish down.
Second was the in-person Chicago audition at 4:20pm. Pretty straight forward. A typical musical theater audition, with 32 bars of something in the vein of Chicago, showing some Roxie style. (More on that later in this post!)
And lastly, due at 8pm that night, a film audition for a character who’s a troubled artist and runs away from her psyche ward (I think it’s a psyche ward?) only to get attacked by these crazy people who are like plastic surgeons from down below.
I didn’t find out about one of the selftapes until I left for my in-person audition.
As I was leaving for my audition at 3pm, I get a notification that I’ve got this selftape due by 8pm that night. The one about the troubled artist. Now, you might be thinking, you have a whole 5 hours to do this tape! Actually, I had plans to celebrate my birthday at 6pm, so make that 3 hours to completely film, edit, and send in this tape.
So I GO GO GO to my audition, do my 32 bars by 3:45pm (remember my appointment time: 4:20pm?), come back home, print out the sides, which, might I add, there were 6 pages to, set up my Neewer Ring Light (which I’ve actually written a whole article about, and has saved my life yet again), and banged out my slate and the two scenes with my mom reading with me. Then, I edited them and sent in my 5 minute long, completed selftape by 5:30pm. Woo!
I created an original song for a non-musical-theater selftape and sent it in.
Remember the Billie-Eilish-like character? Well, I really got into character on that one and actually decided, as I was being Cthulha, to write the song that the sides were alluding to. Named, by them, I’m Gonna Burn Your [retracted] Down. I have a no-curse-word rule on my blog. You can use your imagination! (Or just watch the video below!)
I’m really proud of what I made, and it’s actually the first song I’ve ever made by myself. I made a backing track, wrote the music out for the melody, everything. Then I made a really smooth segue into it in the selftape, because the sides end with talking about the song. Check it out:
^^^This was also done with my Neewer Ring Light! To read the article about this nifty device and possibly even get one for yourself, click here!
Here’s the thing, guys: we have to be our most creative selves. That’s how we command attention and get roles. No, I have literally no clue if they’ve even watched my selftape yet, but it filled me with joy and pride to make it. That’s the point. If you’re proud of it, they’ll subconsciously sense that, and like it a little more!
I sang a Christmas song for my Chicago audition.
I just thought, what would be so unique and yet so in character with Roxie Hart? Santa Baby! I had to do it! It’s that time of year, it’s in character, and it even sort of reminds me of the song Roxie! This is another time where inspiration and creativity win, because I got a callback!
And the callback is today! It’s a dance call… we’ll see how this turns out. Updates to come.
I made my own birthday cake.
It was strawberry cake with cream cheese frosting, and the bottle on top is made out of candy melts with cake inside of it! Happy birthday me! By the way, in the timeline of things, I made the cake that morning, did all of my auditions, assembled the cake, and took this picture at around 5:45. What a day!
That was my birthday for ya!
It was a truly great day, and made me realize that 21 is my year to really get going. Something wonderful is going to happen this year. Heck, something wonderful is going to happen every day! I’m going to stay positive and manifest what I want out of this year. I hope everyone else does too! Manifest what you want, people!
